Naked comedy is back in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Last year comedian Andy Ofiesh brought his Naked Comedy Showcase to ImprovBoston, and after taking his act to Scotland, he's back with recruits.
“Really, what is the big deal about taking off your clothes? It’s more weird for the audience,” he (Myq Kaplan) said, explaining how he convinced himself to join the showcase. “And, stage time is currency.” Karen Glover, who now does more naked shows than clothed ones, agreed to perform if she could wear shoes. Her choice? Thigh-high black leather boots.
Nudity on stage is OK in Cambridge as long as the performers do not touch anyone in the audience and accept no tips. This is the type of exercise that our society needs badly, to expose people to non-sexual nudity, and show bodies that are typical of the human race instead of the digitially enhanced nudity that we see in popular culture. But the novelty wears off quickly and the performers actually have to be funny.
“It’s like [Jerry] Seinfeld said about being famous; it buys you two minutes of crappy jokes,” he said. “Being naked is about the same.”
