Warning: The Following Video Contains Adult Material

PART ONE

PART TWO

Expecting some porn? No, it's just the WJLA TV segment on breast self examinations which show actual female breasts on camera, uncensored. The reporter also warns that "the images are going to be graphic" and that viewer discretion is advised.

Dr. Rapoport at TERA addresses the issue:
We think Lauren Albright, the subject in the video, did a great thing, and we empathize fully with her in this situation. Thousands, perhaps millions, of women are prepared to do the same. If they haven't done so, it's only because of a monstrously foolish Federal Communications Commission that has put repressive ideology before the public good in declaring the glimpse of women's nipples harmful and to be removed from all basic network broadcasts under threat of huge fines.

WJLA produced a good broadcast that was nonetheless marred by claiming it was adult material, containing "revealing," "graphic" images of someone "unclothed." In case viewers didn't understand what a "full breast examination" meant, they were advised that Albright took "the extraordinary step of baring herself."
The Washington DC station is an ABC affiliate, and "Good Morning America" covered the breast exam story by censoring the images and providing the nonsensical "pro and con" arguments which plague most newscasts these days.
"It could be done on a model or mannequin. It can be done through diagrams. … This is exploiting women in order to exploit the audience," said Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America, a conservative group that promotes biblical values. "It's pretty clear that there's one point in doing this, and that is to try and increase their ratings."

Others say the series does the public a great service.
"Others say". Sounds like Fox News, deosn't it? Look, there's not always a 50-50 split on all issues. I swear if the Manson killings happened today the 24 hour news people would be falling all over themselves to present a "balanced" view of the events.

It's as clear as an azure sky that in an era where medical costs are out-of-control, and 45 million people are without health insurance, that we all need to be in tune with our own bodies and not fear the mere sight of body parts, in person or on TV.

The FCC needs to be challenged on these twisted censorship issues, and stations like WJLA who show a little courage in the face of irrational restrictions need to stop apologizing.

Nudist Turned Nude Model

67 year-old David Quammen is on his third career.
How did you get into nude modeling?

I saw an article about a gal who had been operating open drawing sessions at a bar in Adams Morgan. I had belonged to a nudist lodge in California, so that wasn't an issue. I contacted her, and . . . Halloween 2000 was my first experience. I turned 60 just days before that.
Quammen takes his job very seriously and has founded the Figure Models Guild of Washington DC in order to raise the standards of the profession. He also is demanding on the students in his classes.
So I'm sitting there, and I can hear these people yakking and yakking and yakking. So finally . . . I just told them to shut up. And one said, "You shouldn't treat me that way." I said, "You're acting like a child; I'll treat you like one. I'll leave if this keeps going on." It didn't.

Canadian Writer Advocates Topfree Equality

Jack Knox agrees that there is a double standard when it comes to laws governing the exposure of male and female nipples. His solution? Make both men and women cover up!
The thing is, I don't want to see women walking around topless. I don't want to watch men walking around topless, either. Generally speaking, I don't want to see anybody's wobbly bits hanging out, male or female.
Knox acknowledges that he is a hypocrite, that he once enjoyed leering at topfree airline attendants on the French Riviera, but that he loathes the sight of imperfect bodies.
Most people look less like God's image than God's shop-class experiments. Things sag. Things flop, and sweat, and go pear-shaped or concave. Men strut about with huge guts swollen to the point of bursting, as though they're trying to digest an entire piglet.

Not that this should matter. Better to be comfortable with our misshapen bodies than to be made miserable chasing an impossible ideal.

Still doesn't mean you should take your shirt off wherever you want, though.
Again we have this patently offensive attitude that only people with perfect bodies are allowed the freedom to be nude, or partially nude.

Keep in mind that men have not always had the right to topfreedom, and this type of attitude, if it is allowed to prevail, could begin to force men to cover up once again. Think it can't happen? Well, it already has in Washington D.C., the Nation's Capital, where male shirtlessness is considered "indecent exposure". The shocking part of this is that an online Washington Post poll accompanying this article shows that 1/3 of respondents support the mandatory shirts rule!

Apparently some people are so frightened and repulsed by female nipples that they are willing to give up the right for men to show theirs. Equal rights? If this gets tested in the courts, men might soon have to go back to wearing those old bathing suits from the 1920s.

If we are not comfortable with the skins of others, how can we be comfortable in our own?
