Detroit Mall Cancels Nearly Nude Promotions

Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics scheduled "Ask Me Why I'm Naked" promotions, where willing employees wear only flip-flops and aprons, have been banned at two Detroit malls.
Karen MacDonald, spokeswoman for Twelve Oaks owner Taubman Centers Inc., said Lush officials readily agreed to quash the campaign upon hearing Taubman's concerns.

"We, too, are sensitive to the environment, but we also must be sensitive to our family environment," MacDonald said.

Somerset spokesman Ed Nakfoor declined to comment on the mall's decision or dress code.

The campaign likely would be illegal, according to Troy police spokesman Lt. Gerry Scherlinck. "If any of their personal parts are exposed or visible, it's a judgment call."

Indecent exposure and indecent conduct are misdemeanors punishable by a $500 fine or 90 days in prison.

Protecting Children from the Word "Sex"

Australia's Advertising Standards Board decided that the word "sex" used in a billboard ad for erectile dysfunction drugs is harmful to children.
The board said in a report yesterday it had been persuaded to change its earlier decision by the continuing volume of complaints about the advertisement - 220 since it first appeared in February last year - and by increasing community concern about the sexualisation of children.

"The board considered that while this advertisement does not sexualise children, it brings the issue of sex before them," it said.

"The board noted that debate within the community about the sexualisation of children has crystallised community concern about the unsolicited exposure of children to advertisements dealing with sexuality."

Jim Beam On the Rocks

A Jim Beam whiskey ad featuring Swedish models in string bikinis being ogled by a peeping Tom is coming under fire.
The Australian Drug Foundation and VicHealth will make complaints against the ad, claiming it trivialises the criminal act of stalking, objectifies women and links sex to alcohol - a breach of the industry's own self-regulated advertising code.

Parliamentary Secretary for Health Senator Jan McLucas told The Age the ad was unacceptable. She hinted at regulatory change. "Generating cheap controversy with this type of ad is the kind of tactic some companies resort to in an attempt to get more for their advertising spend."
Hmmm...trivializing crime, objectifying women, and linking sex to alcohol...sounds like a typical night of American network television!
