Who Owns Your Body?

You might be under the assumption that YOU own your own body, but if Texas Republican Representative Bill Zedler has his way, the government will own your body. The Naturist Action Committee reports that Texas House Bill 1466 seeks to prohibit any and all nudity by employees or customers of any commercial enterprise. While aimed at clubs that offer nude dancing, the wording of the bill would prohibit nudity at nudist resorts, tanning salons, spas, pools and gyms. Forget about taking a nude shower at the YMCA anymore.
Rep. Zedler has a history of sponsoring legislation that reflects his fascinated focus on regulating and criminalizing the bodies and body parts of others. As the late political commentator Molly Ivins wrote a couple of years ago, "Zedler's against pubic hair. We still have a $10 billion deficit."
Although the NAC is not recommending any action at this time, all Americans who practice the nudist lifestyle need to pay strict attention to what the Religious Right is doing to control behavior in this country. The way this bill reads, it would be illegal to be nude in your own house if you operate a home-based business. Nudist groups would no longer be able to rent pools or bowling alleys for their recreation. And it would appear that all nudist clubs and resorts would have to either close or require their members to be clothed, or perhaps skirt the law by becoming a non-profit club instead of being a commercial venture.
