National Gotopless Protest Day

On August 23, women are being encouraged to exercise their equal rights by going topfree at six planned events across the United States.
Gotopless.org claims constitutional equality between men and women on being topless in public. Currently, women who dare to be topless in public in the US are repeatedly being arrested, fined, humiliated, criminalized. On Aug 23rd, 2008, topless women will rally in great numbers across the USA to protest this gross inequality in the law and will demand for the constitution to be amended to grant them the fundamental right to be topless where men are.

I've pointed out to the organizers that demanding a change to the US constitution of the sort they mentioned will trivialize what they and many of us are attempting to accomplish and may set it back notably.

While TERA may support the aim of gotopless.org, it will not support a protest that unhelpfully demands something like that. A general ERA, yes; an amendment to allow women to be topfree, no.

Paul, I agree with you...please note that when I pass on these news items, it does not necessarily mean that it reflects my own personal opinion. The reasons are many why an Equal Rights Amendment has never passed in the United States, and topfreedom is way down on the list. It would seem that existing civil rights laws are sufficient if enough people are willing to test them. Otherwise judges will continue to rule against topfreedom on the basis of upholding community standards.
