Police Called to Remove Breastfeeding Mother

A disturbing incident at a pool in Canada:
Elisa Buck, a 29-year-old Guelph mother, knows the natural and healthy act of breastfeeding is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and by the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

But when Buck's five-month-old daughter's suckling impulse kicked in at a city-run swimming pool this month, the subsequent feeding was disrupted by a city employee.

Buck was asked to move out of public view.

When she refused, she was asked to leave the premises.

When she refused that order, the police were called.
It should be noted that before the police arrived, a male lifeguard apologized to the woman and told her that she was free to breastfeed anywhere on the premises, but the damage had been done, and the woman was questioned by police in front of her children. Her older daughter had nightmares about her mother going to jail.

As a result of this incident, the city of Guelph is reviewing its policy of requiring tops for women at public pools. In Ontario, it's legal for women to be topfree.
