Russian Girl Wins Naturist Beauty Contest

Evoking nudism's golden days in the United States, the Koversada naturist camp in Croatia held a beauty contest, with a Russian girl named Ana taking the crown.

Why did beauty contests die out in American nudist resorts? Our culture has demoted pageants to the virtual scrap heap, with the once-heralded Miss America contest having trouble even finding a network to carry the broadcast.

Yet our television screens are filled with reality shows which are just as exploitative, perhaps even more so, such as "Big Brother" and "The Bachelor" which are sexually charged. Compared to these shows, the Miss America pageant seems almost naively innocent.

In fact, the American obsession with pretty girls continues full force in other venues, such as in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, and especially on the Internet on sites such as Domai and Met Art. We elevate porn stars to a much higher degree of fame and fortune than any Miss America winner.

Maybe it's time to bring back the nudist beauty contests. At least they are fun, and the souces of many smiles. American nudism has to find ways to increase the smile quotient, or people are just going to smile somewhere else.
