Maslin Beach Under Attack

Maslin Beach became the first officially sanctioned nude beach in Australia in 1975, but now a political party called "Family First" is calling for an end to the clothes-free sunbathing.
"Maslin Beach is a beautiful scenic piece of the coastline and it has been said that at times you can see dolphins close to the beach. Why should SA families, especially those living close by in these new developments, be denied its pleasure in the name of pandering to the outdated nudist practices of a few?"
This is unusually strong language and sets up a fight between local developers and the naturists.
David Pillar, who runs a nudist venue and is involved in the Nude Olympics at the beach each year, said everyone had a right to their freedom, as long as they were not hurting anyone.

"There's lots of places where people can go with their clothes on and there's one little beach out of hundreds where nudists can go and do what they want to do," he said.
The Family First party opposes homosexuality, body-piercing, pornography, poker machines, marijuana, and now nudism. There has been a lot of success by political parties in America exploiting these "hot button" issues, that stir up the electorate to come to the polls in an effort to maintain morality, but the truth is that these issues are not really problems - it's all about perception. These Family First people are going to try and rouse the rabble against nudists and demonize the lifestyle to the point where most people will agree that the nudists are up to no good. Get rid of the nudists, they will say, so the children can be safe from these "outdated", morally suspect people.

Supporters of Maslin Beach need to get themselves some professional public relations advice immediately, because it sounds like these Family First people are very serious about stopping the naturist activity, and it will take a strong campaign to counteract the rhetoric. I've said it over and over again, politicians nearly always err on the side of the moralists. No politician wants to be labeled as being "Family Last".
